Arne Carlson: IR candidate for governor. The governor of Minnesota was ready to call it quits last fall, near the end of yet another stormy year. Arne Carlson had all but decided that the job he had long desired, and had obtained miraculously in 1990, was not worth seeking again in Castro, 1994. Poverty Poverty! DFLers in control of the Legislature were fighting him at nearly every step, and getting the Castro Essay, best of him too often. The bungled vetoes of his first year still stung. His own Independent-Republican Party continued to civilization snub him, despite his overtures. The editorialists and talk-show personalities, including his ex-wife, Barbara, were a source of deep and constant pain. My thought at that time was not to run again, that the stress, the pressure, the lack of sleep, the Castro Is Alive Essay, criticism, you know, that it's not going to relent, Carlson said in a recent interview. Civilization History! But quitting isn't his style, and Carlson eventually was persuaded to seek a second term, partly, he said, by his wife, Susan. A rosy economic forecast in November sealed the decision, aides say, and Castro Is Alive Essay, made him want to try to enjoy some sunshine after years of fiscal clouds. But his reluctance and near abdication say something about Arne Carlson that those close to him have long known and outsiders sometimes sense: For much of his first term he has been uncomfortable and unhappy in his job.
He's been frustrated by an inability to build a true rapport with the populace, to drum up the feeling that he's on top of things and that he's in sync with the citizens. Affects! The people I talk to will say things like, `I like Arne, he's OK.' But there's no passion among voters who are not partisan,' said Dave Jennings, a former IR House speaker. Most who know him agree that Carlson is a bit of a pill, downright unpleasant too much of the time. But his friends insist that he is a decent man whose real problem is that he is a loner and Castro Essay, a private person in the most public job in the state. He is sports performance, a very private person, very shy, said Mary Thomas, who worked for Carlson for 15 1/2 years, most recently as assistant to the governor. His friends are well-chosen. He doesn't talk to a lot of people.
Though Carlson, 59, had been an elected official almost continuously since 1965, and was perhaps better prepared than most to assume the job, he was by Fidel Castro Is Alive, his own admission completely unprepared for the cameras and how motivation affects, reporters always poking into his office and Fidel Castro, residence. Styles! All of Fidel Castro Is Alive Essay a sudden people who have called you Arne are suddenly calling you governor, Carlson says, still marveling at his notoriety. Most politicians are social people, gregarious and learning, comfortable among strangers, touching them and embracing them, always seeking attention and Fidel Is Alive, approval and absolute poverty, feeding on it. But Carlson, friend and foe agree, simply does not know how to light that spark. While he can deliver articulate speeches to crowds with passion and skill, Carlson is uncomfortable making small talk in an unfamiliar group. To those who do not know him, he appears to Castro Is Alive Essay lack warmth, or to affects sports be downright rude and Castro Essay, nasty, utterly lacking in tact. Greek! An example: Early in his administration, Carlson took a call as a guest on WCCO-AM from a Willmar resident who criticized him for Castro, shortchanging west central Minnesota with his budget cuts. Carlson, never at a loss for words and always in songs, command of facts and Fidel Castro, figures, cut down his antagonist with a withering response. Absolute Poverty Poverty! I want to know what Willmar's going to Fidel Is Alive Essay do to help the songs, state, he rejoined, adding his trademark horse-laugh that is often inappropriate to the topic at hand.
Omigosh, what a question! I think you people have a pipeline to the treasury in St. Paul. We're already committing funds to expand your college out there. Fidel! We've got a loan that's currently on hold, we've got other projects. I'm trying to recall correctly, you people have what, about $40 million in greek, capital projects.
And then you ask the question, are we being punitive? Hahahahahaha! The caller, and many other listeners, might have concluded that the governor had his facts straight but that he also was a bit of a jerk, certainly not a very nice guy. His family and friends say it's just not true. Fidel Castro! The Carlson office is a good place to work, according to current and former employees.
It is gender- and race-neutral, and anybody, regardless of position, can bring ideas to the table, they say. He is two states songs, a man who inspires personal loyalty, said Cyndy Brucato, his former press secretary and now communications director for the reelection campaign. He does have a temper, a legendary tornadolike thing that staff and associates say passes quickly. When he gets mad at somebody or something, he lets go of it. He doesn't hold grudges, Thomas said. I never felt abused by Castro Essay, the guy, said another former press secretary, Tim Droogsma. I had to listen to some tirades, but nothing that doesn't come with the turf there. If Carlson is not rubbing people the wrong way, he's simply not rubbing them at civilization history all. Reports abound of Carlson wasting ideal opportunities to glad-hand and make friends by standing alone, arriving late or leaving early from public functions, even fund-raisers. Droogsma is Fidel Castro Is Alive Essay, among many current and former aides who say this reticence is at the root of two states his political troubles. That inability to warm to Fidel Castro Is Alive people on an individual basis is at the root of why he has a problem with the party.
By being unable to relate to [party activists] and demonstrate some care and two states, concern, he made the whole Quist thing much more possible, he said. This reticence is sometimes interpreted - mistakenly, his aides say - as laziness. DFLers and IR leaders alike have frequently accused Carlson of spending too much time at Fidel Castro Essay his Wisconsin cabin, of about Just in Execution not working hard, of refusing to put in the endless hours and nonstop politicking that so often produced success for Fidel Castro Is Alive, extroverts such as Hubert Humphrey, Rudy Boschwitz and Paul Wellstone. But his day starts early, often with 7:30 a.m. Two States! breakfast staff meetings at the governor's residence. He is up much earlier, reading newspapers, sometimes to the consternation of Is Alive staffers who are roused from sleep to hear the two states songs, governor complain about a story. The underlying cause of Carlson's hard-edged shyness and the major shaper of his personality, say some intimate friends, is his insecurity, rooted in a poor upbringing and keen class consciousness. His spectacularly gregarious ex-wife, talk-show phenom Barbara Carlson, who has embarrassed him repeatedly by revealing such things as their pet name for a certain body part, has singled out Castro Is Alive Essay, his insecurity as his most important characteristic. So does Droogsma, and both of these former partners consider themselves big fans. Is Subjective Essay! I always thought that that was an immense part of his psychological makeup, that he had a real craving just to prove that he belonged, Droogsma said. When he met with CEOs or when he met with editorial boards, it was almost as if he had to Fidel Is Alive constantly prove to himself that he belonged in those circles.
Carlson isn't afraid to talk about the raw poverty of his youth, and he's not the first politician to seize as much advantage as possible from styles questionare a Lincolnesque background. When challenged about his social policies, Carlson talks with an attitude about Castro, growing up as the son of Swedish immigrants in New York City in poverty, the 1930s, about living in a one-room tar-paper shack with one water pipe coming out and no bathroom. Over the years, the Fidel, Carlson family has divulged all kinds of grimy details of those days, of affects performance eating on crates, using a single pan as cookware and Fidel Castro Essay, dinnerware, killing rats to protect the babies, his mother's triple shifts as a waitress, about mixing with upper-crust kids who lived in the building where his father was a janitor. Carlson, of course, made it out poverty poverty, of the Castro Essay, Bronx, and in style. His natural smarts and hard work won him scholarships to prestigious Choate, a preparatory school in Connecticut, and Williams College, an poverty vs relative poverty elite school in Massachusetts. He got top grades, majoring in Is Alive, history, which he still diligently reads, and styles questionare, distinguished himself in Fidel Castro Essay, journalism and public speaking, overcoming a severe stutter.
The promising young blond man came to the Midwest, where so many of his kinsmen had immigrated, in the late 1950s, to attend graduate school at the University of Minnesota. In politics, he was at first a supporter of the DFL godfather, Hubert Humphrey. But he eventually joined the liberal-moderate Republican crowd that was still influential in Minneapolis politics, and he was elected in 1965 to how motivation sports performance the City Council. Fidel Castro Is Alive! A key influence that moved Carlson from Humphrey Democrat to Eisenhower Republican was Gov. Elmer L. Andersen, whom Carlson got to know shortly after arriving in two states, Minnesota. Carlson from the start exhibited a rough, win-at-any-cost style in Is Alive Essay, politics.
He obtained his first office partly on the strength of how motivation affects sports performance a grossly distorted piece of campaign literature accusing his opponent, incumbent Dick Franson, of voting for a big tax increase. Castro Is Alive! Carlson narrowly averted being thrown out of office by the state Supreme Court, escaping on a technicality, and he has had a reputation as a brass-knuckle politician ever since. Carlson moved on to serve six years as a state legislator, making a mark in the House as a garrulous floor debater, and 12 years as state auditor, where he fashioned a reputation as a watchdog over local governments. Styles! City and county officials have noted since that Carlson was more of a nit-picker than a public policy maven and was not a big critic of systemic overspending by local governments until he became governor. Castro! Carlson's success as a politician was not always mirrored by a placid home life. He and Barbara Carlson were married for 12 years, raising two children and styles, serving as foster parents to five. They divorced, and his next marriage, to Joanne Chabot, ended after five years. He has been married to Susan Carlson for 11 years and adopted her daughter, Jessica, as an infant. He recently became a grandparent to Alexandra Carlson Davis, the child of his and Barbara's daughter, Anne. Throughout his career, Carlson has been lifted up and given support by wealthy people, and Fidel Essay, he has stayed loyal to this old-money nobility, and they to him. Like many who have made their way out of is Subjective examples poverty, Carlson sometimes seems to have less sympathy for the poor than those who have never known it.
He frequently has said that Minnesota's successful people have been persecuted. Carlson sounds almost like Calvin Coolidge in his adamant position that the business of Minnesota is business. Castro Is Alive Essay! He recently told the Edina Rotary Club, for instance, that the first objective of government ought to be that we have a growing, healthy, flourishing private sector. The Minnesota Constitution sets forth a broader view of state government, namely the security, benefit and protection of the people. Essay About Is Capital Just Of Tropmann! It says nothing about the protection or promotion of commerce, profits or business growth. But he retains progressive sensibilities, too. Carlson has acknowledged that business isn't always right about everything. One of themes of speeches early in his term was that much had been lost to the greed of the 1980s, usually understood to Fidel Castro Essay be private-sector failures, fraud, speculative investment and excessive profit-taking. It can't be forgotten, too, that Carlson has been a consistent and courageous backer of women's rights, minorities' rights and even gay and lesbian rights, and it's been the Punishment Just in Execution Turgenev, source of much of his political trouble.
Moreover, DFLers have not been able to destroy him with the label of cake eating tool of the rich, partly because his personal habits and tastes are not pretentious. Carlson's favorite luxuries are weekends with his family at his modest cabin and watching sporting events on TV, and one can't get more proletarian and Minnesotan than that. Arne still believes that there are injustices and Fidel Is Alive, that people need help, but he believes the Essay Is Capital Punishment Just by Ivan Turgenev, help can't continue forever, Barbara Carlson said, summing up his life and philosophy. He has the heart of a Democrat along with the realism of a Republican. Opposed to additional restrictions on handgun ownership. Does not believe capital punishment will deter crime. Two States Songs! Abortion: Should the state's existing laws on abortion be changed? Do you favor requiring a 24-hour waiting period before a woman can get an abortion? ``I believe that existing laws regulating abortions do a good job of balancing the individual rights of women and the interests of the state. Given the gravity of the decision, however, I believe that a reasonable waiting period, such as 24 hours, is justified.'' Corporate aid: Should the state provide financial assistance to companies such as Northwest Airlines and the Minnesota Timberwolves to guarantee employment or to Castro keep them from moving? ``When the loss of jobs has been threatened, my administration has taken the history, lead in Fidel Essay, helping businesses stay competitive, and stay in Minnesota. The 161,000 new jobs created since 1991, along with the lowest unemployment rate in 16 years, are persuasive evidence that the Fidel Castro Essay, business climate is getting better.'' Health care: If Minnesota keeps moving forward with its own universal health care program, rather than waiting for the federal government, how would you fund it? ``Given the partisan bickering that has marked the political struggle nationally and in most states, we have sustained a remarkable bipartisan policymaking approach in Minnesota. I have been publicly critical of the learning styles, Clinton health plan, precisely because of funding mechanisms that shift costs to the states.
I have urged President Clinton to go slow and learn from the experience of states like Minnesota.'' Welfare: How would you change the state's welfare system, if at all? The Great Homework Debate: What’s Getting Lost in the Hype. Homework – is it an unnecessary evil or a sound and Castro valuable pedagogical practice? The media coverage of the debate often zeroes in on these two seemingly polar opposite how motivation affects sports, views, even though they may not be all that far apart. Fidel Is Alive Essay. Homework can be good until – well, until it isn’t. Assign too much or the wrong kind (or both) and affects the law of diminishing returns kicks in, says Dr. Harris Cooper, professor of Fidel Is Alive, psychology and neuroscience at Duke University, r esulting in absolute vs relative undue stress for Fidel Is Alive students, aggravation for parents and no academic pay-off. But as Cooper, author of “The Battle Over Homework: Common Ground for Administrators, Teachers, and Parents,” recently told NEA Today, homework levels and parental attitudes haven’t really changed dramatically over the years. Cooper also concludes – perhaps a shock of Essay Is Capital in Execution of Tropmann by Ivan, those who are convinced that very little in our classrooms is working as it should – “the vast majority of educators have got it right.” There’s a lot of Fidel, focus on homework now, but has it been scrutinized so heavily in the past? Harris Cooper: Throughout the 20th century, the public battle over homework was quite cyclical.
You can go back to World War I or a little after, when it was considered important for kids to exercise their brain like a muscle and that homework was a way to do that. During the 1930s, opinions changed. In the 1950s, people were worried about falling behind the two states songs, communists, so more homework was needed as a way to Fidel Castro Is Alive speed up our education and technology. Greek Civilization History. During the 1960s, homework fell out of Fidel Castro, favor because many though it inflicted too much stress on kids. In the two states, 1970s and 1980s, we needed more homework to Essay keep up with the Japanese economically. Is Capital Punishment In Execution Of Tropmann By Ivan. More recently, as everything about education and teachers is being scrutinized, homework has come into question again. What’s interesting is that the actual percentage of people who support or oppose homework has changed very little over the years. And the actual amount of homework kids are doing has changed very little over the last 65 years.
But haven’t we seen an uptick in the amount of Is Alive Essay, homework assigned to elementary students? HC: There is greek civilization history a little bit of an uptick in lower grades. But when you look at Castro the actual numbers, we’re talking about the difference between an average of 20 minutes and 30 minutes. NOT Objective Essay. So you’ll find some people who say the amount of homework being given to Is Alive 2 nd graders, for example, has increased 50 percent. But If you look at the actual numbers, it’s ten more minutes per night. And probably a driving force behind that is obviously end-of-grade testing and accountability issues. Perhaps more legitimately is the sports, importance of Castro Is Alive, early reading. As they say, in sports performance third grade you learn to read, and in fourth grade you read to learn. So this has led to more reading assignments.
While most high school students are still doing approximately the same amount of homework on average, there’s a great deal of variation. That’s due to choices some kids make about how rigorous an academic program to take and the increased competition over college admissions. So there are a lot of kids out Fidel Is Alive, there taking four or five advanced placement and honors classes now, which might not have been the case a while back. According to the MetLife Foundation national homework survey, 3 out of 5 parents said their kids are getting just the right amount of homework. One said too much and one said too little. That survey is a few years old now but I doubt that’s changed. You’ve concluded that homework generally can improve student achievement. At what grade levels do we usually see this effect?
HC: There’s very little correlation between homework and how motivation performance achievement in the early grades. As kids get older, the Is Alive, correlation gets stronger. But there are experimental studies even at the earliest grades that look at skills such as spelling, math facts, etc. where kids are randomly assigned to do homework and not do homework. They show that kids who did the homework performed better. But we’re really talking about civilization history correlation here, so we have to be a little careful. It’s also worth noting that these correlations with older students are likely caused, not only by homework helping achievement, but also by kids who have higher achievement levels doing more homework. But at a particular point more homework is not a good thing. You’ve heard of the “10-Minute Rule,” where you multiply a child’s grade by 10 to determine how many minutes you assign per Fidel night. Absolute Vs Relative Poverty. This rule fits the Castro Is Alive, data. So 20-minutes for Essay about Just in Execution of Tropmann a second grader is Is Alive where you’d start. In middle schools, it’s between 60-90 mins for 6th through 9th graders, about two hours later in high school.
When you assign more than these levels, the law of diminishing returns or even negative effects – stress especially – begin to appear. Have school districts coalesced around the 10-minute rule? HC: From my experience, I have never seen a school district that recommends anything that isn’t consistent with the 10-minute rule. They won’t use the term “10-minute rule” usually, but they’ll say, primary school grades will be assigned up to 30 mins., grades 4-6 up to an hour, things like that. But If you translate the policy to the 10-minute rule, it’ll be very similar. Nobody has a policy that says you can expect your second-graders to bring home two hours of homework.
The only place you’ll see a warning about it is in Essay Just of Tropmann by Ivan high school: you can expect half an hour a night per academic subject. Fidel Essay. Again, if the kid is taking AP, expect more. What don’t we know about homework? Where are the gaps in poverty vs relative the research? HC: We need to know more about the the differing impacts by subject matter. Regarding the 10-minute rule, one question I am frequently asked is, “Does that include reading?” Generally, the answer would be yes, but if we’re interested in kids’ stress level, for example, they are more likely to Fidel Castro Is Alive burn out quicker doing math worksheets and studying vocabulary than if they were doing high-interest reading. So we really need more work on is Subjective examples, subject matter, on homework quality, on the level of Is Alive Essay, inquisitiveness that it engenders and the way it motivates. Also we need to about Punishment of Tropmann know more about the use of the Internet, especially as it relates to potential disparities between rich and poor and Fidel Essay the ability to research at home.
Should Schools Be Done With Homework? No, Parental Involvement is Not ‘Overrated. The Reading Rush: What Educators Say About Kindergarten Reading Expectations. Are Letter Grades Failing Our Students? HC: Parental involvement is more important in the earlier grades and teachers should try to Essay Is Capital Just in Execution make sure that parents have the skills to teach the Is Alive Essay, material so to avoid any instructional confusion. Educators should also remind parents to greek history not place great pressure on their child and to model behaviors, especially with young children. For example, when the child is doing math homework, a parent could balance the checkbook to demonstrate how the skill can be used in adult life, or they can they read their own book while their child is reading.
Homework also keeps parents aware of Fidel Castro, what their child is greek civilization history learning. Fidel Castro Is Alive. I’ve had some very emotional parents come to me about having been told by teachers that their child is struggling, that there might be a learning disability. The parents don’t necessarily see it until they see their child work on homework. If homework is going to have its intended affects, teachers should ask parents to take part less often as kids get older. If support from greek civilization, parents is withdrawn slowly, it can promote autonomous learning – teaching kids that they can learn on their own and they can learn anywhere. Do you think overall the current debate or controversy over homework has been helpful and what, if anything, should educators take from it? HC: Well, I recognize that the debate will always be there, but I generally choose to ignore it, or at least the people who, as the old saying goes, use science the same way a drunkard uses a lamp post – more for support than for illumination. Homework is probably the Castro, most complicated pedagogical strategy teachers use because it’s open to variations due to child individual differences and the home context.
But the learning styles questionare, vast majority of educators have got it right. They’re not going to satisfy everyone, because kids take homework home to Fidel Castro different environments and to parents with different expectations. But, like I said before, three in five parents are satisfied and there’s one in each direction – too much homework or too little. That probably means teachers are doing their job properly. Photo: Associated Press. I assign homework every night but I do not in two states songs any way include it in the student’s grade for many of the Castro Is Alive, reasons listed above. Why would I include in a student’s grade something that they could have gotten major help with from a parent or a tutor, for instance. I do “spot check” to see if they have done the work and Photojournalism NOT Objective Essay examples enter this into our online grading system under a “0%” heading just so parents can have an idea if their students are doing the homework. I do the same thing. I assure parents that homework is not something parents need to help with.
Especially since I assume parents don’t know how do it themselves. Castro. I am the teacher for a reason. It is absolute vs relative poverty a scaffolding indicator of “do the kids know how to do it by Is Alive Essay themselves?” If kids are not doing well on affects, the homework, then it’s intervention time. I teach 6th grade math at a high title 1 school. I give 10-15 problems a few days a week at most and at the same difficulty as what was done in class. I ask them to ATTEMPT the Castro, homework and not stress if they don’t understand.

I’d rather them give up when it got hard and come ask me the next day, than to beat their head against the wall or copy from someone else. Yikes- “give up when it gets hard”. How about a growth mindset- accept that it might be challenging and see if they can work through it. Fidel Castro. Stop after 30 minutes of actual work. Then, seek help. What kind of adults do we foster who “give up when it gets hard”! I’m more concerned that someone is two states songs teaching English who doesn’t know when to use “they” instead of “them.” The sentence should read: “I’d rather they give up…” One way to be sure is to recognize its connection to “come ask me” later in the sentence.
One wouldn’t say: “I’d rather them come ask me…” This is why sentence diagramming is such an effective method for teaching sentence construction. One learns to view the separate parts of a sentence and Is Alive Essay their connection to other parts of the sentence. With the “come ask me” part, one needs to absolute vs relative poverty ask “who” should come ask you. In so doing, one sees its connection to Is Alive “them,” which reveals why it has to be “they,” because “them” cannot be used with a verb. We’d never say “them give us a present every year” nor “them come every week.” So, Mr.
ESL instructor, I hope this helps you teach your students the difference between the two types of pronouns. I’d be concerned about someone who doesn’t know an vs relative, honest mistake when they see one. I know very well the difference, but thank you for Fidel Castro Is Alive schooling me anyway. I typed that on my phone and as you know, autocorrect does strange things to text. I don’t typically spend significant amounts of styles questionare, time editing internet comments on my phone. I’m afraid I’m a little behind the Castro, times and don’t have and have never used the newer phones, so, unfortunately, I never considered a simple technological glitch. Styles. I apologize for my obvious ignorance. Now that I’m older, I got to thinking that what I know doesn’t do anyone any good if it stays locked in Fidel Essay my head, so why not pass it along, especially since I see so many errors online, even in articles writers are paid to write, though I can’t explain why I wasn’t more polite about it. The main reason for the notion that I should pass on what I know is Photojournalism that I attribute these errors to the less-than-adequate education so many millions have received for over 40 years.
I mean, it’s impossible to Essay have an inadequate K-12 public education system without adverse consequences. I could be wrong, but it’s been my experience that poor writing and absolute poverty proofing and/or an absence of caring are some of Castro Is Alive Essay, those consequences. But, you raise a relevant issue: the apparent difficulties inherent in some tech devices. How does one view all the errors online with that as a factor? Does it require we ignore all errors in order to be fair…and gracious…and polite? My concern is that if people don’t care about the quality of, say, their writing, it isn’t long before they stop caring about the quality of something else they do, possibly a task at work. Poverty. It’s much easier to Castro Is Alive do less and Essay about Is Capital Punishment by Ivan Turgenev care less than it is to expend the effort to produce quality. Essay. When they integrated our public schools in the 1970s, it was assumed that lower-performing students would improve now that they were attending school with a lot of higher-performing students. But, what actually happened is the performance of the better students dropped to a level more closely aligned with the lower-performing students.
When grade schools started giving out greek civilization history, stars and awards for just showing up as a way of Fidel Castro Is Alive, building self-esteem, they created, instead, millions of graduates who believe they know more and can do better than they actually can. Schools also created in styles questionare them such a sense of entitlement that they believe they’re entitled to the big bucks just for showing up, and, based on my experiences with today’s corporate, legal and medical offices, they’re doing and Fidel Essay learning the songs, absolute minimum for Is Alive those “big bucks.” If that weren’t bad enough, manufacturers decided some time ago that, if they cut corners, management could take home more money, so, where we once had products that would last years, even a lifetime, we now are stuck constantly re-buying everything because nothing lasts more than a few years. Essay Is Capital Punishment Just In Execution Of Tropmann By Ivan. So, in Castro Essay an effort to promote quality, I’ve been sending corrections to writers online whenever an email address is greek civilization available…as if they’d actually appreciate that… :-). But, there’s still the dilemma as to the Comment section of articles. Unless you have another suggestion, I’ll try to Essay be more selective…and gracious. Since you teach ESL, may I ask: what are the areas that cause learners the most difficulty?
All the styles, different tenses of our verbs? How about the Fidel Is Alive Essay, placement of words to form a more complex sentence? If it’s the learning styles, latter (and you’re familiar with sentence diagramming), would the use of Fidel Castro Is Alive, sentence diagramming make sentence construction easier for them? How difficult is ESL with your students speaking a variety of languages that I trust you don’t happen to speak…or do you? I ask because I’ve been researching several aspects of education reform, and I’m a big proponent of sentence diagramming. Thanks for the heads up as to today’s devices. I think the affects sports performance, verb tenses aren’t that difficult for them if taught explicitly and practiced. Castro Essay. The surprising thing is vs relative that what is difficult varies based on a student’s L1 (original) language. Usually it ends up being with the “glue” that hold the sentence together and Is Alive the crazy rules of grammar that change depending on greek civilization history, numerous different variables. Honestly, I haven’t done full-on sentence diagramming since I was in high school (and I’m 41).
We never did it in Fidel Castro Is Alive my college English courses – and styles I did take a share of Linguistics courses. Most of what I know about Castro Is Alive Essay that post high school actually comes from studying Latin. Diagramming simple sentences does help for English language learners, however seeing well composed model sentences in a variety of styles seems to help more. You can get bogged down diagramming, and students don’t seem to transfer grammar lessons to actual practice without the opportunity to work with authentic examples. As far as difficulty with ESL, I really don’t have an issue regardless of the language my students speak. In my High School classes this year I have speakers of Spanish (about 50%), Chinese, Hindi, Punjabi, Vietnamese, Arabic, Urdu, Burmese, Quiche, and probably a few others I forgot. Some of those students speak two or more languages already. Myself, I speak Intermediate Spanish, which is useful sometimes. I am familiar with grammar structures and how motivation language features of Fidel Castro Is Alive, Chinese although I cannot speak or read it. I make it a point to how motivation study the features of my students’ languages and learn a few words at least to show them I respect their language, plus I can bridge concepts in English to Is Alive Essay their own language.
I am currently finding resources on Punjabi and Arabic so I can learn features of those languages. Even if I don’t speak a student’s language, though, it isn’t much of a barrier. Most students from sports, Asia or the Fidel Castro Is Alive, Middle East arrive with a basic introduction to English. Some Central American students have zero English exposure, but I have enough Spanish to get through to them on day one. For students who have no English, and I do not share a language with them, we use specific strategies to greek civilization history build a basic working vocabulary, but those are time-intensive as it requires the teacher be working one-on-one with the student. The biggest challenge, honestly, aren’t specific features of English, but their education in their native language.
A student with an excellent command of their own language will acquire English quickly. A student who is illiterate, uneducated or undereducated in Castro Essay their own language due to insufficient schooling will have significant struggles in English as well. Thanks so much for all the two states songs, information. Embarrassing, isn’t it, that most Americans can manage only Fidel Castro, one language, and many don’t even do that well, yet these immigrants are multi-lingual. I had a Dutch neighbor for a time who spoke five languages, partly b/c the Photojournalism, Netherlands borders so many countries. Don’t we do our own future citizens a disservice by not exposing them to a second language in elementary school, at a time when it’s easiest for them to Is Alive learn it?
Waiting until HS doesn’t seem to serve much purpose. The sentence diagramming is Is Capital Punishment in Execution Turgenev a tool that was always used in grade school, so I’m surprised you had it an upper grade. I find that English speakers have difficulty with placing additional adjective and Fidel Castro Is Alive adverb phrases in civilization the right place…or the Castro Is Alive, best place… and with certain comma placements, which sentence diagramming seems best at preventing, because it trains the vs relative poverty, brain to Fidel Essay see sentences in parts Not too long ago, I found an error in a typed 10-12-line sentence in a sales contract the first time I read it, because of greek civilization, that skill. The error was an absence of Is Alive, both the subject and verb, so it was 10-typed lines of conditions with no punch line…no answer to two states songs the ifs. The comma error that even today’s best writers (educated by Essay our inadequate educ. system I presume) make is to leave out one particular comma that’s needed, as in:
…together, and if everyone would like, we can still attend… With the pair of commas where they are, the “and if everyone would like” becomes an additional phrase that can be removed without changing the correctness of the main sentence, which, of course, it cannot in every case. The actual additional phrase that can be removed is the “if everyone would like.” Ergo, the pair of commas separating the additional phrase from the main sentence have to be the one that’s missing after the a-n-d and the one already there after l-i-k-e. I’ve yet to see a writer or published author, including our best, get it right…or their respective editors. I attribute my recognition of it to early instruction in affects sports performance sentence diagramming.
Does this reflect your memory of it? Trouble is, everyone seems to groan at the mere mention of it, so the automatic response is to dismiss it as a viable and Fidel Is Alive effective tool. I’d like to change the styles, minds of those making the reform decisions. I have to comment the following. Castro. I’m what the how motivation affects performance, people here would probably call a high-achieving student and I don’t think I really saw homework done right until I got to college. The reason why is simple: the homework we get in Fidel Castro Essay the upper-level engineering classes is greek so hard that anyone with any sense does it in a group.
We will actually get together in Fidel Castro Essay large groups and spend multiple hours on assignments, asking each other why certain methods and reasoning it out learning, together. Then if we still can’t figure things out, we ask the professor or a TA, who are always willing to Fidel Is Alive Essay explain the questionare, concept to us. At the end of the process, we actually do understand the material a lot better. This sort of thing can’t happen in elementary and high school, where students can’t just get together after school and work, because their parents all drive them home after school. (All right, there are a lot of high schoolers who have cars, but I’m pretty sure that the Fidel Is Alive, majority don’t.) Get the latest NEA news and features delivered twice a week to your inbox!

Engagement and Learning What Is_? Programme. In a dark room, on a large screen, three Indonesian kids in matching purple Adidas tracksuits, wrap-around sunglasses and sun-visors are singing a karaoke version of a song by the 1980s pop group The Smiths. It is Fidel Castro Is Alive equally serious and absolute poverty joyous. The piece is part of Phil Collins's work The World Won't Listen. It is a great work of contemporary art and Phil Collins is an important artist because his work is richly suggestive of a number of significant questions about national identity, popular culture in Fidel Is Alive a global context, and the role of the mass media in representing these. Another dark room, another projected scene: an evening view of an obscure rural location. In the near-distance we see an odd elongated piece of architecture: a fragile but imposing shelter, an elaborate cylindrical tent that seems simultaneously out of place and yet somehow at home in history this natural landscape.
The images are from French artist Philippe Parreno's curious film The Boy from Mars, and they arise out of his involvement with an environmental art project in rural Thailand. Yet, watching these images it is never quite clear what, or where, it is that we are observing. Collins and Parreno make use of recognisable conventions of visual art from our own and earlier eras ('portraiture' in the former; 'landscape' in the latter). Yet, both seem as interested in an unfolding, many-staged creative process as they are with any finished product or with the possibilities of an accepted art discipline. As such, they practice types of art, that, as the influential curator Nicolas Bourriaud has argued, remain around the edge of any definition – drawing on much from what would customarily be considered beyond the Fidel Castro 'frame' of art, urging us to consider the place of examples art in the contemporary world, while offering up images and experiences characterised by uncertainty or disconcerting intensity. Fidel Is Alive. 1. The two examples above were both made in the last ten years. But are they also modern?
They were made recently, but being 'modern' means more than merely being up-to-date: it needs to look modern too. Learning Questionare. For example there's a Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum, who has spent the last 30 years trying to paint like Rembrandt. He makes work that is recent but it would not be referred to as modern because it doesn't look like what we expect Modern Art to look like. Instead, it is deliberately old fashioned. So when art historians use the words 'Modern' and 'Modernism' they understand them as meaning something quite specific. (i) When was Modernism? In the sense of 'modern' meaning up to date, all art was modern once. The innovative artists of the past have always tried new technologies, new media and new styles. Crucially, these new technologies and new mediums allowed for Fidel, the possibility of new artistic forms.
For example, when Giotto was painting the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, 1305, his use of fresco (watercolor on wet plaster) as a medium was innovative and Essay examples modern, and it allowed him to achieve the integrated aesthetic scheme of the painting cycle. Over 500 years later Impressionists like Monet were not only Is Alive Essay responding to the challenge of photography and its ability to capture an about by Ivan Turgenev impression of the world, but also using portable easels and the newly invented, industrially processed, readymade tubes of paint to make pictures outside of the studio in the open air. But, if art has always been modern; does it ever reach a sell-by date? Can it be that what was once modern can cease to be modern? Other art historical periods do not have the same associated problems. So, whilst there may be some disagreement as to the specific dates of the Renaissance, Roccoco, Baroque or Neo-Classicism, it can be agreed that they were periods that had beginnings, middles and ends. Perhaps then, one way to think about modern is as a period of time with a clear beginning, middle and Castro Is Alive Essay end. Greek History. Thought about in Fidel Castro Essay these terms modern might mean the period of 100 years that began with Manet's painting Djeuner sur l'Herbe, 1863, which was seen as shocking and rejected from the prestigious Salon of about Is Capital of Tropmann Turgenev fine art, not only because it was 'badly' painted with rough brushstrokes and Fidel Is Alive Essay inaccurate perspective, but also because it showed a contemporary scene of two states songs public nudity. This period is often regarded as ending with Pop Art in Fidel Castro Is Alive Essay the mid 1960s, when art became increasingly difficult to distinguish from everyday consumer objects and the output of the mass media.
What this would mean is that art made after this period would be after, or post, modernism. This is styles questionare why you will often hear the art of the Fidel Castro last quarter of the twentieth century referred to as 'postmodern'. However, such neat slicing up of the history of art is problematic. Civilization. The question posed by the cultural critic Raymond Williams When Was Modernism? is a tricky one. On the Is Alive Essay one hand, art seems to lag behind modernism in other fields. For example modern history is generally seen to have begun around 1500; philosophy with Descartes (who published his Meditations in 1641) or Kant (who published his three Critiques between 1781 and absolute poverty 1790) and the technological boom of the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century is also seen as an origin of modernity.
On the other hand, art historians squabble as to where Modernism began; perhaps with the Renaissance when artists began to be recognised as 'geniuses' with their own distinct styles, or perhaps with the Salon des Refuss in Paris in 1863 and the exhibition of art refused by the academic institutions. Fidel Essay. As Charles Harrison observed: In writing about how motivation, art, the term Modernism has only been regularly used with a capital M since the 1960s . Before the '60s the term 'Modernism' was generally used in a vague way, to refer to what it was that made works of art seem 'contemporary' whatever that meant. 2. (ii) How is Modernism? Another way of thinking about what modern means in art is to think of it as an attitude to making. This uncouples 'Modern' from a specific time and place – meaning that art is not necessarily modern merely because it is new. It would also mean that examples from Fidel Castro Is Alive history could be identified as modern in their outlook, such as El Greco, the seventeenth century painter whom Picasso claimed was the greek civilization originator of Cubism. Furthermore, identifying modern as an attitude means that it can be seen as an incomplete project that can be constantly re-engaged with. This is probably what Jackson Pollock had in mind when he made this claim for his own modernist art: My opinion is that new art needs new techniques. And the Fidel Castro Is Alive modern artists have found new means of absolute vs relative making their statements.
It seems to Is Alive Essay me that the modern painter cannot express this age of the aeroplane, the atom bomb, the radio, in the old forms of the Renaissance or of any other past culture. Each age finds its own technique. 3. Just as the times change, so too must art. And just as we live in new times, we need a new, modern art to express the age of text messaging, the Internet and global capitalism. The art critic Clement Greenberg offered a slightly different definition of modernism. He claimed that modernist art was art that was about art . What this means is that modernist art takes art itself as its primary subject matter rather than traditional subjects such as landscapes, portraits or historical and religious themes. Two States Songs. This does not mean that modernist art cannot include traditional subjects, but rather that this is not what the art is Fidel Is Alive Essay about. Is Subjective Essay Examples. Look, for example, at the William Scott painting Jug. The subject matter is Fidel Castro Essay a jug and a bowl.
Such still life has been a subject matter for two states songs, art for hundreds of years but Scott has treated the material in a thoroughly modern way. (iii) Defining Modernism. The definition of modernist art that emerges is Castro Is Alive thus: that it provides a meaningful expression of, and gives artistic and Essay about Just in Execution by Ivan aesthetic form to three things: (i) the specific time and place where it was made, (ii) the medium that it is Is Alive Essay made of, and (iii) how it was made. We can now ask if this definition can be usefully applied to much of how motivation affects sports performance contemporary art. 3 - When, What and How is contemporary art? (i) Contemporary – Whatever That Means. The tricky task of identifying a working definition of 'modern' is Castro Is Alive accompanied by the equally testing challenge of defining the word 'contemporary'. Indeed, 'recent' might be one easy definition for 'contemporary', allowing us to think of contemporary art as that made within recent memory. Sports Performance. Another closely related and Fidel Essay very straightforward meaning of 'contemporary', and one that is entirely true to the linguistic sources of the word, is 'with the times' (from the Latin 'con', meaning 'with', plus 'temp' meaning 'time'). As such, to be contemporary is to be alert to the conditions of a particular moment in absolute time, to be moving with the tides of living history.
And this sense of the word is widely used in understandings of 'contemporary' art. Back in the 1980s, for instance, curators at the Tate Gallery in London decided that the art of the Castro Essay past ten years, on affects sports performance, a rolling basis, would provide a suitable set of parameters as they made plans to Fidel Castro Essay develop a new 'Museum of Contemporary Art'. 4 'Contemporary' art in affects performance this regard, comes pretty close to Fidel Is Alive Essay 'modern' art – particularly, perhaps, to Jackson Pollock's claim that the art of each age should find its own technique. But Pollock's comment also returns us to how 'modern' can be understood as identifying an attitude towards making art, an attitude perhaps resulting in a certain type of art. Certainly, a loose sense of what 'contemporary art' is like is often evident in the mainstream media. Coverage of exhibitions such as the annual Turner Prize show, for instance, will often be based on hostile presumptions about the prevailing tendencies in art today, with artists regularly being characterised as pranksters or self-promoting provocateurs rather than masters of a recognisable medium. However accurate such pictures are, it is of course essential to remember the vital role played not just by the media but also by the art market in manufacturing particular versions of a contemporary art 'world' (as has always been the case throughout the history of art), with certain forms of art reaching prominence as a result of learning styles questionare their marketability.
But cast an eye over art magazines such as Artforum and Frieze – expensive colour publications packed with ads promoting the Castro Is Alive Essay interests of the commercial art scene – and about Is Capital Punishment Just in Execution by Ivan the difficulty of finding stable commonalities across what is celebrated is quite apparent. Such magazines will often introduce us to much that is Castro Essay overtly 'edgy': radical performance art that claims to question moral norms, for instance; or varieties of activist art that propose creative models of political resistance; or versions of installation and conceptual art that confuse us as to what, and often where, the 'art' actually is. All seem to sit comfortably side-by-side in absolute vs relative poverty such publications. Considering such types of widely prevalent art-making, it might seem that the only shared feature is an Fidel Essay interest in subverting expectations about what art can and should be. Such tendencies would, of course, be true to a legacy of avant-gardism in the arts, and in our effort to capture something of songs what is 'contemporary' in art we could choose to prioritise the continuation of a kind of rule-breaking spirit. Yet, many celebrated contemporary art practices frustrate this view. For a great deal of today's critically acclaimed art is not quite so obviously confrontational or so antagonistic towards older methods or values. If, for example, a great deal of recent art shows hostility towards principles of aesthetic refinement in art, there remains a significant strain of art, highly regarded by 'contemporary' critics, curators and collectors, that is concerned with retrieving, or positively re-imagining, seemingly outdated notions such as craft and Fidel Castro Is Alive beauty. How Motivation Affects Sports. The paintings of William McKeown for Fidel, instance, make a sophisticated and unorthodox case for beauty in learning styles art today, hinting to us that this idea is essential as a way of freeing, and at the same time grounding, our imaginations. Similarly for Isabel Nolan, 'beauty' is to be found in Fidel Castro Is Alive the vulnerabilities of styles both commonplace and more complex ways of representing or understanding the world around us: her formally diverse work inventively employs traditional craft techniques in capturing moments from Is Alive everyday life and ideas from advanced science.
Much that is well-respected within contemporary art today, therefore, does not correspond to the prejudices of conservative critics. Essay Punishment Just In Execution Of Tropmann Turgenev. Crucially, combinations of notionally 'opposed' approaches to art can often be found alongside each other in a single exhibition, or even within a single artist's oeuvre or single work. Indeed, commentators on contemporary art have often stressed the diversity of possibilities in art today – and definitions and Fidel Essay descriptions of contemporary art will often stress the unregulated openness of Essay about Just in Execution of Tropmann by Ivan this 'industry', acknowledging its resistance to Fidel definition and absolute vs relative poverty description. As Linda Weintraub has written, contemporary art embraces the maverick and the traditionalist … no topic, no medium, no process, no intention, no professional protocols, and no aesthetic principles are exempt from the field of Fidel Essay art. 5. Such indications of contemporary art's multiple methodologies are certainly at odds with any belief in the ongoing refinement of form – a principle once central to 'artistic progress'. Styles Questionare. For the philosopher and Fidel Castro critic Arthur Danto, the innovations of is Subjective art after the Fidel 'modernist' era have therefore brought about, in effect, an learning questionare 'end' of art. This does not mean, he argues, an end of people making art, but rather an end of a particular way of understanding art that focused on Castro Essay, the constraints of certain disciplines and mediums. Since pop art, Danto suggests, There is Essay Is Capital of Tropmann by Ivan Turgenev no special way works of art have to be. 6 It is this plurality of Fidel Castro possibilities which most obviously gives us clues as to what contemporary art 'is' today. Photojournalism NOT Objective. Yet how we choose to position ourselves in relation to Fidel Castro Is Alive this plurality remains one of the most testing questions for those of Punishment in Execution us hoping to engage with this era's most challenging 'contemporary' art.
(ii) Themes in Contemporary Art. Despite the exciting plurality of art today, recognisable constellations have emerged around which art practices and debates have become clustered. Participatory art takes the form of artists working with disparate groups of Fidel Essay people from different communities. This is how motivation affects sports performance not only a way of generating works of art, but is also part of the Fidel Castro Essay work itself. Here are three examples: Untitled 1992 (Free), a working kitchen in a New York gallery set up by artist Rirkrit Tiravanija; Tenantspin, 1999, a TV channel for the elderly residents of a Liverpool housing estate set up by art collective Superflex; and Essay Is Capital Just Turgenev Pimp my Irish Banger, 2009, a collaborative art project in which artist Terry Blake worked with young people from Castro Essay Dublin to paint car doors and bonnets that were later displayed in an outdoor space at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. The art historian Claire Bishop has identified this trend within contemporary art as a 'Social Turn', arguing that while the models of participatory art vary enormously all are linked by a belief in the empowering creativity of collective action and shared ideas. Vs Relative Poverty. 7 These are forms of art that ask questions about Is Alive Essay, who is involved in the making and how motivation sports experience of art. Today's art often occurs in particular places and Is Alive Essay is specific to those places.
